Reel-Unreel, in collaboration with Julien Devaux and Ajmal Maiwandi, was commissioned by Documenta 13.
Kids role reels of film through the streets. “In 2001 the Taliban burned films from the Afghan Film Archives, people say the fire lasted for 15 days.” Scene’s from marketplaces, panoramic views, people walking. “Look, all these people are locked up” “Here you see his head, the rest is scratched”.

Reel-Unreel derives from Alÿs’ interest in children’s street games, such as the art of rolling a wheel with a stick, which he witnessed in Bamiyan and Kabul. Since the object being rolled around the undulating streets of Kabul’s old town is a spool of film, “real” turns into “reel.”
