A small step for mankind, but a considerable one for me. After having deliberately neclected the subject for a long time, I decided something finally needed to be done about the disfunctional media plugin situation on the videopage of my website. I implemented the Cortado Java applet in the pages linked from this page which contain video-content.

Over the weekend I have been testing Kdenlive, a multi track video editor for Linux, made curious by some positive recommendations and reviews saying that Kdenlive “is a really good application as it stands, and if it continues to be developed in the same fashion as it is at the moment, it will be a fantastic tool for those who want to edit their home movies on linux.”

During the Open Video workshop members of Hacklab built a computer which is optimised for best performances with Cinelerra, following specifications on the Heroine Warrior and Cinelerra CV websites.
We are working on a wiki documenting the construction of the 64 bit machine, links follow a.s.a.p. In the meantime here you can already see pictures of the step by step process.

During the evenings of 15 – 18 february, Jan Gerber and Sebastian Luetgert programmed Pirate Cinema screenings in the backroom of café El Peñon. View some images or visit their website http://www.piratecinema.org for more info on the project.
The afternoon of sunday 18 february, the last day of the Open Video Libre workshop, Jan Gerber presented several online projects for sharing video. Amongst others, we had a look at P2P distribution, Democracy Player and V2V.
BitTorrent
BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the whole of the corresponding costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead of the distributor alone servicing each recipient, under BitTorrent the recipients each also supply data to newer recipients, thus significantly reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source as well as providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence upon the original distributor.

Andraž Tori gave an introduction in Cinelerra. Here you can find a PDF of his presentation, touching upon basic principles of digital video, the capabilities of Cinelerra and optimisation of workflow. Andraž is a founding member of Kiberpipa, a Ljubljana based multi media center, working with open source tools; an important node in the Slovenian cybernetic community.
Kiberpipa is “promoting a creative and critical discourse of the culture of new media and current information and communication technologies, while also researching and encouraging the interaction between researchers, artists, multimedia activists and theoreticians. Our main goal is the promotion of multimedia literacy and digital awareness in an interested post-modern society through presentation and discourse on a very high level. The ultimate goal of our existence is the establishment of a platform for joint experimental research and development of new technologies and their implementation in the spheres of culture, art, science, technology and politics.”
During the Open source Video workshop, Michael Murtaugh showed how to use the terminal as a powerful tool for video-editing.
Here you can find a draft-PDF of his presentation, including some useful tricks, tips and commands. Check Michaels site automatist.org for more about his work.
Pictures of the workshop Open source video organised by Constant 15 -18 februari in Brussels are now online. See the image gallery.
