Firewire problem 1
I have been using Kino and Cinelerra for almost a year. Until now, I never had to export video to tape. At this moment I am working on a video project that requires me to do that, so I have been trying to get the export settings in Kino to work. Replacing the default dv1394 export settings: /dev/ieee1394/dv/host0/PAL/out with /dev/dv1394-0 seemed to work, it actually gave sound and image export to camera.
After a good night sleep with lots of happy ieee dreams, I switched on my computer in the morning to do some work and found that all firewire functionality was down. No more camera recognition or even external firewire external disks.
At the moment I’m still struggeling getting my firewire back to work. I’m not super confident in understanding ieee1394 issues, so I hope that posting about this will give me some material to fall back to next time a similar thing might happen.
In the previous post about this, I am referring to BXLUG tip how to get kino’s import through the raw1394 module to work.
I found that these tips are relevant for Hoary, not for Dapper. The writer of this page on Ubuntu Community Documentation https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire outlines that in Ubuntu 6.06
“The device file (also called a node) which acts as an interface between Kino, Firewire and your camera can be one of:
*/dev/dv1394/0 (gives access to Firewire for video capture but not to the camera’s controls)
*/dev/raw1394 (gives raw access to Firewire and allows access to your cameras controls, but poses a security risk)
When you connect your camera and turn it on udev should create one or more of the device files needed,
This is different from Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary) where
“The module you need for capturing from Firewire are built into the Linux kernel, but 5.04 doesn’t create the device files automatically when you plug your camera in. To make the device files you need to edit /etc/modules as root.”
Adding raw1394 and video1394 to the modules list solves that.
When I installed Ubuntu 6.06 one of the first things I did was adding the modules to the /etc/modules, as I had done before in the 5.04 and 5.10 Ubuntu versions. In the beginning that worked fine, just as before.
After reading that adding the nodes to the modules list would no longer be necessary, I suspected I had messed up something by doing just that, and after far too much time wasted on trials and errors, I decided to do a clean install of the system. New kernel, erasing any messed up files obstructing the ieee input.
Strangely enough this did not change anything: both camera and firewire external disks still remain unrecognised.
here’s my dmesg output:
