Open letter to Google: free VP8, and use it on YouTube Open letter to Google: free VP8, and use it on YouTube

The Theora codec is derived from the proprietary VP3 codec, released into the public domain by On2 Technologies. Google has now bought the On2 company.

The Free Software Foundation has published an open letter to Google:

“With its purchase of the On2 video compression technology company having been completed on Wednesday February 16, 2010, Google now has the opportunity to make free video formats the standard, freeing the web from both Flash and the proprietary H.264 codec.”

Read also Google’s challenges of freeing VP8; in this blog post it is argued how the purchase could mean a step forwards on the road to a universally acceptable free video codec.

raw1394 module … encore

After installing Ubuntu 9.04 from scratch, I have had some bad flashbacks to the zillion times this problem occurred before in previous sytem installations.

Capturing in Kino / dvgrab does not work because the /dev/raw1394 module is not loaded and I, as a user, have no write permissions.

I found the following post helpful. It explains how to configure/make install the lmatest version of Kino and how to add the module.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5959051&postcount=8

small note to step no. 9:
“adding your username to group ‘disk’:
In my case this group did not exist, so I added this group to the list, and then made myself a member to it.

“The goal of the Apertus: Open Source Cinema Project is to create a powerful free and open cinema camera that we as filmmakers love to use. The idea of using an Elphel camera for this particular purpose was born in 2006, found many followers over the years and ultimately resulted in this community driven project entitled “Apertus” and this website.”

The camera is operated with video disk recorder and file browser (camogmgui). See development wiki page.

Here’s the discussion forum of the Apertus Open Source cinema project.

This wiki-page is created as FAQ about the development of the Elphel digital cinema cameras.
